SYNOPSIS: STRAND is an investigation into the mysterious life of pioneering photographer Paul Strand. Though Strand was ranked as one of the century's great photographers by such notables as Susan Sontag, Sergei Eisenstein and Hilton Kramer, he was often ignored during his lifetime. The film traces Strand's path from New York to Mexico to Europe, interviewing friends and collaborators (including Georgia O'Keefe and Fred Zinneman) along the way, while presenting examples of Strand's work, from early avant-garde to portraiture to natural and urban studies.
