  • SYNOPSIS: This hilarious, one-of-a-kind documentary examines a lost chapter in film history: Eastern European Communist Musicals. The film traces the history of these oddly appealing films, which tried to combine socialist philosophy with Hollywood-style musicals. From the 1930's through the 60's, these lavishly produced movies covered operatic peasants to swinging students. Clips of films never before seen in the west include singing pig farmers, dancing factory workers, socialist summer vacations and the obligatory singing tractor driver. EAST SIDE STORY brings a new and highly entertaining perspective to the conflicts between ideology and entertainment in the former Soviet Bloc countries. In between the cheery musical scenes, director Ranga interviews former technicians and performers who recount their difficulty in making these seemingly decadent movies. Caught between the pressure to please the censors and appeal to audiences who preferred American films, these artists tried to create works of pleasing propaganda. "The one film at Sundance that captivated everyone lucky enought to see it." Los Angeles Times "A wildly entertaining revelation." Variety
