- SYNOPSIS: Shot entirely in the wilds of Siam, CHANG tells the story of a farmer and his family (including a scene-stealing pet gibbon) who have settled a small patch of land on the edge of the jungle. These pioneers struggle constantly against the many dangerous wild animals around them - bears, tigers, leopards and even...changs! More than merely a blueprint for that other great jungle epic, KING KONG, CHANG is great entertainment and extraordinary filmmaking. To capture incredible footage of ferocious jungle animals without a telephoto lens, Ernest Schoedsack literally risked life and limb. But the filmmakers' daring paid off - CHANG's climactic elephant stampede is still one of the most exciting scenes in cinema history. The extraordinary score by composer, Bruce Gaston, performed by the traditional Thai orchestra, Fong Naam, incorporates ancient melodies associated with wild animals, including monkey and elephant refrains.
"Spellbinding...sequence by sequence the picture was planned to seize an audience by the hair, to excite them as no ordinary movie had ever excited them. And the magic works today." Kevin Brownlow, THE WAR, THE WEST AND THE WILDERNESS.
