  • SYNOPSIS: Two women, Yasmine and Leila, share a passion for Beirut and for the cinema. Both long for a sense of how Beirut fell from being a star of the Middle East--steeped in business, pleasure, and drama--to the war-torn and heartbreaking shell it is today. In search of Beirut's memory, looking for any telling images the city may be willing to offer, they encounter a reclusive film enthusiast named Monsieur Farouk. He takes the women on a veritable jouney of images, from the American studio efforts of the 1970's to the Beirut of the 1960's as seen through the lenses of Arab filmmakers, to the French films of the 1930's in an attempt to understand the interests of a powerful foreign presence. Through the time machine of cinema, Yasmine, Leila and Monsieur Farouk take us on a mythical and history laden tour of one of the Middle East's most complex cities. "Does an excellent job of depicting the modern history of Beirut." Resat Kasaba, U. of Washington, School of International Studies
