- SYNOPSIS: MAN OF THE YEAR is a mock-documentary based on the true-life experiences of filmmaker Dirk Shafer, who reigned in 1992 as Playgirl's Centerfold of the Year. Blurring the lines between truth and fiction through staged reenactments combined with actual documentary footage, the film follows Dirk through the ups and downs of his tenure. His job is to be a mascot for the magazine and portray himself as the "ideal man for all women". There's only one catch: Dirk is gay, and has no clue what women want at all. But he takes his job seriously, and aggressively researches women's desires and fantasies. He "plays it straight", all the while fearing he'll be "outed" and lose his job.
Dirk's hilarious yet often poignant adventures serve as a truly unique method for dramatizing many of the essential conflicts all gay persons must face today. MAN OF THE YEAR ultimately is a parable with a surprisingly powerful message.
